When should I get tested after a possible exposure?

Window periods vary by infection and test. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea may take up to 2 weeks to become detectable. An HIV antibody test can usually detect infection 23–90 days after exposure. Syphilis blood tests may become positive after 4–6 weeks, but repeat testing at 12 weeks may be recommended. HIV-1 PCR (qualitative NAT) may detect HIV earlier, usually 10–33 days after exposure. However, a negative result during this early period does not rule out infection, and follow-up testing is required. If you have symptoms, seek medical advice without waiting for the window period. If a possible HIV exposure occurred within the past 72 hours, seek urgent medical care for PEP. People taking or recently using PEP or PrEP should follow a clinician-directed testing schedule.
