Counts reticulocytes—young red blood cells—in blood. It shows how actively the bone marrow is making new red blood cells.
Used to help find the cause of anaemia: low reticulocytes suggest reduced production; high reticulocytes suggest blood loss or red cell breakdown (haemolysis) or recovery after treatment.
